Berlin is divided into three transport
zones, but for most purposes A and B are sufficient. A single
fare ticket is valid for two hours after validation (that
is when you stick your ticket into a machine and get it date
stamped as you are about to board your first bus, tram or
train of the trip) but this ticket can’t be used for
return or round journeys. A short hop ticket is valid for
three U or S Bahn stops and six bus or tram stops. A day ticket
is valid until 3 am the day after cancellation. A seven-day
ticket is transferable and valid for seven days after stamping.
A group ticket can be bought for up to five people.
Länder-Tickets are available for a single day and cover Berlin Transport for up to five people or for parents and any number of their children. This ticket is also valid for trips outside Berlin - so if you are planning to travel to a particular destination, check out this option. The cost is about €30
U-Bahn
There are no ticket barriers, but spot checks are frequently carried out. There is an English translation on ticket vending machines at each station.
S-Bahn
The S-Bahn is mainly an urban means of transport. It is independent from other rail traffic and operates every three to four along the central routes.
Taxi
Taxis are numerous and available at all times. Stands can be found at all main stations and airports as well as outside hotels. Most drivers speak English. You can hail a taxi from the street or book in advance. Taxis hailed on the street are slightly cheaper. Taxis are always cream-coloured and metered.
Car Rental
Driving is easy in Berlin because of its wide, long avenues and main roads and civilised traffic. Right of way is to traffic coming from the right. If you’d like to hire a car, it can easily be done online and then collected at the Airport on Arrival.
Cycling
Cycling routes are common and easy and safe. You are allowed to take your bicycle on the U- and S-Bahn, in special compartments that have a bicycle sign. There are less cycle paths in East Berlin. Your bicycle needs a ticket on the U-Bahn. There are plenty of bike rental shops. Hire prices are between €6.00 and €25.00 per day.
